What's With the 100MB Limit?

Our software provider has a 100MB file size limitation on uploads.  But we know that our more discerning clients prefer the option of uploading an uncompressed file at a depth of 16bit. Such files quickly grow in file size and easily exceed the imposed limits. For example, a file for printing a mere 16x20 at 300ppi at 8 bit is nearly 90MB uncompressed, and almost 180MB at 16bit, so there's not much opportunity there for going to a decent sized print.

Thankfully we have a work-around!

What to do if you hit the 100MB limit:

The website upload has both a minimum and maximum limits. The minimum is 150ppi for the print size you want to order, and the maximum is the 100MB total file size.  If you are bumping up against the file size limit, this two step work-around has performed very well for hundreds of our artists:

  • Create a temporary placeholder for ordering
  • Send us the proper file for printer via wetransfer.com ( or your preferred sharing service ) If you are using drop box, send us a public link, not a share invitation please.

Step 1:

Open your large file in Photoshop (or your preferred editor) and save a new version as a temporary placeholder file in jpeg format.  Jpeg only supports 8bit so that part will already be saving some file size. The jpeg compression slider can be used to take care of the rest.  Just lower the quality slider until the projected size is below 100MB.  Don't worry about quality here since you will be sending us a proper file to actually print from - just get it below 100MB. In the case of the example to the left, the compression had to be set down to 5 to get the file below 100MB. (83.6MB in this case).  Remember, we're not printing from this file, it's just a placeholder so you can set cropping etc. and place your order. We'll replace it with the high quality file you send us in Step 2.

Step 2:

Once your order is completed and you have been shown the order completed page, you may now send us your proper printing file via wetransfer.com

Navigate to https://wetransfer.com

Add your file to the form and include some info that will help us identify the order we are subbing for and bit of contact info just in case we need to reach out with questions.

You will be sending the file directly to our Customer Services team at trueart@reedphoto.com

Press the transfer button and your file should begin uploading. Please keep the browser window open until the transfer is completed.

That's it! We'll take it from here and make you a beautiful print.
